The CrossFit Experiment

I WAS OFFERED TO TRY CROSSFIT AT MY FRIENDS GYM AND HONESTLY I WAS HESITANT TO SAY YES….

at first because I know myself better then anyone and also I heard about CrossFit. Let’s list the things I have heard:

  • It’s really difficult
  • You MUST be an athlete with amazing abdominals
  • You could possibly die
  • You have to be able to lift extremely heavy weights

Maybe you have heard the same things and when you hear these things your brain instantly say “No fricken way!”  I am no athlete, sure I run and work out but my job is a Bank Manager… after reading this blog walk into any bank and look at the staff.

I promise the majority of us bankers are not going to be in any olympic shape nor will we be in any competition. This is unless one day they make networking or cash counting a sport. I just did the everyday type of workout “I picked things up and put them down.” 30 minutes and I was done. I also like I stated before I knew myself and my body, you see I was in a horrific accident where I was hit by a car and this messed my body up really bad (A story for another blog) and my fear was CrossFit is not a workout that allows you to modify.

Then LJ the owner of Roxfire Fitness came into my life and shined a different light on what I thought was CrossFit was all about.

Like for example you don’t have to be an athlete to join CrossFit and abdominals are not mandatory. Lifting heavy weights is not true at all because you start off with little to no weights so that you can learn proper form. As for the difficulty part…well that is true and it makes sense if it was as easy as picking things up and putting them down we’d all be super models. So it is difficult but you will learn to embrace it. And you could die part… well you could also die texting and walking and what sounds cooler “He died but broke that record and gave it his all” or “he was sending a funny cat meme and was hit by a bus.” Point made!

So after our little talk I decided that I will give fitness fort lauderdale a try… and I will hope you will follow me through my trials and tribulations. Each day I do this I will tell you about it briefly and really give you my honest thoughts.

Day 1

Name of the workout “Chain Reaction.” I was a bit nervous because it was my first time and even though it was only three people I wondered if they have worked out here before. I could tell one guy has because his muscles were bulging out of his shirt and I felt like he talked in CrossFit code. The other guy was like me… not sure about what he was getting himself into but we locked eyes and I could tell he was happy I was not bulging with muscles.

Like any workout it started with a warmup and LJ was great because he explained it perfectly on how we are going to do it and what it should look like.

When he said go he was NOT working out because he wanted to make sure we were all doing it the right way. Well the two of us… bulging muscles was in his own world. The warmups were kicking my ass and I closed my eyes and thought wtf am I doing. Then I remembered “CrossFit was difficult” this I found out in the fricken warmups but right when I thought I was going to stop the time was up. We stretched and the official CrossFit would begin.

I loved the workout because LJ modified it for me and made it so it was not impossible but still remained difficult. LJ kept telling us we are only competing with time… you want to get through it as fast as you can remembering safety. Once he said go I was all in and was pushing myself to the max. I finished with what I thought was a good time but what I loved was the feeling I had. I was shaking and I was tired but I felt good. To hear LJ say things like awesome job or that was impressive made you feel great. He was getting motivated with every push and with every grunt he cheered you on more.

I Also Wanted to Mention One Other Thing and I Feel That This Is the Most Important Part of Crossfit.

While I was working out bulging muscles took time to help out and also cheered me on and I could tell that we were motivating each other. Yes he was lifting heavier weights but it did not matter we were a group of people coming together to get the best out of this workout. It was amazing and at the end we finished with a high five and honestly it made you want to come back for more. So day one was impressive… but it was still day 1. I will keep you posted on how Day 2 goes!

A Quick Intro to HTML

What is HTML?

HTML or hypertext markup language, is one of the many coding languages that we teach to our kids here at Launch After School. HTML is a markup language which is used to create content and documents for the internet, or the “World Wide Web”. HTML was one of the first languages used to render web pages in the early days of the 1990s web, Invented by Tim Berners-Lee, who used HTML to create electronic documents to be displayed online. Today HTML is used by many people since the internet has expanded to be what it is today.. At Launch After School we teaching kids to code between the ages of 8-14 how to write in HTML and also how to apply it in everyday life.

Who Uses HTML?

HTML is used by web developers to create websites on the internet. These websites which are created using HTML are then uploaded onto the internet where different web browsers such as Safari, Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome can display them by reading their HTML code.

Examples of HTML:

  • Launchafterschool.com
  • USA.gov
  • UTexas.edu

HTML Tools

While many experienced HTML coders only need a notepad to write or edit their code, there are a few tools out there that can help a beginner get started. The main tool that a software developer uses is called an IDE, or Integrated Development Environment. This is the place where code is written, checked for errors, and tested. Some examples of these software programs are;

Atom- A free IDE software that allows you to hack and customize your coding experience. There is an endless number of add-ons and packages you can download to enhance and customize your coding experience. It even fully integrates with Github! It’s even possible to write and release your own tweaks and tools for the Atom experience.

Eclipse- An IDE widely used by professional software developers that is most well known for developers that write in Java or C / C++, but it can be customized for use with a wide range of languages. They also have a cloud IDE where you can code, save, and access from any device.

Online IDEs- There are several IDEs that allow you to write and test code on a website, including the IDE that Launch After School has built into their platform. All your code is saved online and tested on that website. SOme other examples include codepen.io for front end languages such as HTML, CSS< and JavaScript. Repl.it allows you to develop, test, and deploy on a wide range of programming languages

Microsoft Web Expressions – This is a program available through Microsoft which allows you to view live changes on your HTML website template as you are editing it.

Adobe Dreamweaver – Adobe Dreamweaver is similar to Microsoft in that it allows you to edit HTML websites. Some people prefer this since Adobe also offers Photoshop which is often times used as well to create graphics and logos for websites.

Languages That Compliment HTML

There are many languages that can be used together to create a beautiful website. The websites that are listed below do not only use HTML but also other coding languages to make the HTML work and flow better. If you want to start learning HTML to make websites then here are some other languages you can also look into.

  • JavaScript
  • PHP
  • CSS

When you learn different languages that compliment each other, you are able to create complex websites which can accomplish many tasks. HTML is just one of the many cool coding languages we teach here at Launch After School.

HTML Coding Future Outlook

HTML is a language that is expected to stay around for many years. Any front-end web technology will interact with HTML, the language of browsers, to create the tools that you use online. As technology continues to grow at a rapid rate, more developers are needed every day. Learning HTML is the first exciting step in being able to create the web technologies that most of us interact with and rely on every day.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2017 the median pay for web developers was $67,990 per year, which is well above the national income average. It is clear that by starting your kids off with coding at an early age, you are setting them up for success in the future. Even if your student doesn’t want to become a developer, having the knowledge to create and code the technology of the future will put your kid ahead in being a leader and innovator for the next generation.

5 Helpful Tips for Making Time for Yourself: Scheduling Exercise and Other Activities

This is a stressful time of the year, the elections (regardless of which candidate your supported), preparing for Thanksgiving and Christmas or Chanukah… You need to make time to take care of you. Your health and well-being are the most important.

Track how you spend your time. Keep a diary for a week, write down what your activities are and the time spent doing them. Remember, there are 168 hours in a week, and if you work approximately 40 hrs. a week, and sleep 8 hrs. a night (56 hrs.), that leaves 72 hrs. for other things. That’s plenty of time; surely you can carve out 5-15 hrs. a week for yourself.

Determine the most important tasks to do each day. Every morning, use your note app or write down the top 3-5 things you would like to or need to accomplish that day. Make yourself a priority and put yourself on that list, schedule exercise. By doing this, you can focus on what’s most important. Set the alarm on your iPad, phone or computer to remind you.

If you’re in front of the computer all day, take periodic breaks. Try to stand up and/or walk around every hour for at least a minute or two. The apple watch even has an activity function timer to remind you to stand! Your brain can only focus for so long without a break. You’ll find by getting up and moving it will clear your mind, get rid of brain fog, and refresh you.

When scheduling your tasks or meetings, add some buffer time. For example, instead of allotting a half hour for a meeting, give yourself an hour. This way if it runs over the half hour, it won’t encroach on the time allotted for other tasks. Conversely if your appointment ends early, you’ll have time for any catch-up activities like returning calls or emailing.

Don’t be too rigid, it’s not worth the stress. Try to keep to your schedule or to do list, but remember life happens and people are more important than schedules. So, if a friend or family member calls, speak to them or go see them. You can always add an uncompleted task to the next day.

We don’t trick you into a long gyms near allentown pa membership or fool you with quick fixes.
